Draft Mission Statement from January 7, 2010 Meeting

Andover School District is committed to providing responsive technology and digital literacy for all students and the entire Andover Public School community that will prepare our students to thrive in an ever changing globally competitive world.

Draft Mission Statements

From Ray's Powerpoint example mission statement:
The technology department is committed to providing globally responsive and supportive tools supporting curriculum to all students in a safe, stimulating and motivating environment, and is dedicated to helping students become lifelong learners and responsible, productive members of a rapidly changing society.

Kate's suggestions:
Without all the word dressing our committee has 3 important elements to our mission:
1) Determine the optimal technology structure for the Andover Public Schools [a timeframe within which the structure will be effective would be helpful if anyone is a great predictor] (This is tricky. I beleive our work is to be used as part of the strategic plan which will outlast any technology plan because of the speed that technology changes. We need to make suggestions for the first year and then only as far as 3 years out - anything longer will be pure guess work. - Ann )
2) Offer content recommendations [to whom?] on what elements of technology should be incorporated into the curriculum by grade [which can include elements such as ethical use of technology] - (I am not sure we should be so specific as to prescribe the age a certain technology should be taught or used. I am interested in the elements of technology you refer to - this might be a great benefit to the teaching faculty and to others reading our final recommendations. Again, I am wary of being too specific, but being too general will hinder the progress as well. - Ann. Yes, I don't think we should be specific by age, rather I meant to be clear that some elements may apply to high school but not elementary. In other words, that there is a spectrum of needs that changes from the youngest learners to the oldest - Kate)
3) Effectively communicate the whys and hows of migrating to that technology [to the staff, parents and community]

2 elements I do not think our committee should be responsible for are 1) setting up the required teacher education both for using and teaching technology [but it is critical that this get done] and 2) determining how the technology content is taught [again critical that this is done by the teaching experts] (I agree completely. - Ann)

Bonnie's comments on the above:
The points above are all important. I did not add in above as it's getting tough to follow but agree with them, particularly the caution regarding not trying to project beyond 3 years - yet there is a need for our community to see a plan that goes out at least that far and the strategic plan will carry us out further.
Bonnie's draft mission statement for the committee:
Identify the technology infrastructure and approach needed for APS to enhance the acquisition of 21st Century Skills in a collaborative, flexible environment and enables rigorous cross-disciplinary learning as well as the differentiation required to ensure the future success of all students.
